Social Media Strategy

Challenge

As part of their ongoing large-scale hiring efforts, Macy’s had the opportunity to leverage social media, reaching out to passive candidates (those who are not actively looking for jobs, and who are highly sought after by recruiters) as well as active job seekers, connecting with these candidates and recruiting top-quality talent into the organization.

Strategy

Sanger & Eby developed a full range social media strategy for Macy’s recruiting, addressing the varied needs of each audience and a detailed plan for execution across specified social media platforms appropriate for the individual recruiting profiles and organizational needs. Deliverables included not only the strategy, but also an editorial calendar and content library for each platform as well as a library of resources for generating new, engaging content. Sanger & Eby also provided consulting services, including training the Macy’s recruiting team and actual execution of the organization’s social media strategy.

We designed and developed the Macy’s recruiting presence across all appropriate platforms, including LinkedIn Career Pages, multiple Twitter feeds, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr. Strategic microsites and specific landing pages, also designed and developed by Sanger & Eby, supported the social media presence, with calls to action targeted for the needs of each audience.

Sanger & Eby provides monitoring services for Macy’s, utilizing tools that include Raven, Tweet Deck, HootSuite, Social Mention, and Google Alerts.

Results

Macy’s, Inc.’s LinkedIn Career pages grew to more than 32,000 followers in 6 months; its Retail Executive Career Connection group rapidly grew to more than 1,800 members in the same period. Both continue to grow daily, and more targeted recruiting groups rolling out. LinkedIn uses Macy’s as a case study for how to effectively use Career Pages, and the company reports tremendous success in its ability to connect with passive candidates—a critical target market for them.
